Snow Machine is back in Queenstown from 8–13 September 2026, bringing five days of skiing, live music, mountain stages, après sessions and late nights to the Southern Alps.

It is a massive week—but you do not have to spend every waking hour on the mountain or in a bar.

If your crew wants to see another side of Queenstown, step aboard for a couple of hours on Lake Wakatipu. You will still have snow-covered mountains in every direction, but instead of lift queues and packed venues, you will have open water, fresh alpine air and the chance to hook a wild trout or landlocked Chinook salmon.

Snow Machine by night. Lake Wakatipu by day.

The official Snow Machine Queenstown programme runs across Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Queenstown, with on-mountain stages, après events, the Main Arena and after-parties.

A short fishing charter is easy to fit around the action. It works particularly well:

On Tuesday before the main festival programme gets underway

On a morning when your crew wants a break from the mountain

On Sunday as a final Queenstown mission

On Monday for guests staying on the seven-night package

Whenever tired legs need a rest from skiing or boarding

Our 2-hour fishing experience is the easiest option for a packed itinerary.

If you have a little more time, our 3-hour fishing experience gives us more time to explore Lake Wakatipu and find the fish.

A proper Queenstown experience—without another adrenaline ride

Queenstown has no shortage of bungy jumps, jet boats and big-ticket adventures. Fishing offers something different.

Lake Wakatipu is New Zealand’s longest lake, surrounded by the Remarkables, Cecil Peak, Walter Peak and the wider Southern Alps. In September, the mountains are still white while spring begins to arrive around the shoreline.

It is one of the best times to experience the contrast that makes Queenstown special.

You do not need any fishing experience. We provide the rods, tackle and guidance, and our crew will show you what to do.

Some guests come determined to catch their first trout. Others simply want to get out on the lake, take in the scenery and enjoy a couple of hours with their mates.

Both are perfectly acceptable.

What can you catch in September?

Lake Wakatipu is open to fishing year-round. Depending on the day and conditions, we may target:

Rainbow trout

Brown trout

Landlocked Chinook salmon

This is wild fishing, so no catch is guaranteed—and that is part of the experience. Every trip is shaped around the weather, lake conditions and where the fish have been moving.

Shared trip or private charter?

If there are only one or two of you, a shared fishing experience is a straightforward way to get on the water and meet a few other festival travellers.

For a group of mates, a private fishing charter is the better fit. You get the boat to yourselves, more flexibility and a relaxed experience built around your crew.

Our main charter boat can take groups of up to six, and larger groups may be possible across multiple boats with advance notice.

It is also one of the few Snow Machine activities where the non-skier, injured mate or person taking a day off the mountain can still be part of the same mission.

What should you bring?

September in Queenstown can deliver blue skies, cold mornings and fast-changing alpine weather—sometimes all on the same day.

Bring:

Warm layers

A waterproof jacket

Sunglasses

A beanie

Sunscreen

Your phone or camera

We provide the fishing equipment, safety gear, snacks and refreshments.

A New Zealand freshwater fishing licence is required for anyone actively fishing. You can purchase your fishing licence online, or we can help arrange one onboard.

All trips are weather-dependent, and the skipper makes the final call when conditions are unsuitable.

Make this your Snow Machine side mission

The festival crowds will see Queenstown from the mountain. Come and see it from the water.

Queenstown Fishing has been guiding on Lake Wakatipu since 1995. We are a local, family-run team specialising in teaching beginners, hosting groups and tailoring each trip to the people onboard.

If you are coming to Snow Machine 2026, we still have limited availability during Snow Machine week. Check our live calendar or contact us with your group size, preferred day and whether you want a shared experience or private boat.

Get back in time for the next set.

Fishing Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea offers another side of the Southern Lakes experience.

Both lakes hold wild brown trout, rainbow trout and landlocked Chinook salmon, surrounded by high-country scenery, remote shorelines and deep alpine water. Depending on the season and conditions, fishing methods may include trolling, spinning, softbaiting and selected fly-fishing techniques.

Queenstown Fishing’s regular short lake charters depart from Frankton Marina and fish Lake Wakatipu. Guided fishing on Lake Wanaka or Lake Hawea may be available as a private or specially arranged experience, depending on the season, weather, guide availability, vessel requirements and logistics.

This guide explains the differences between the two lakes, what species can be caught, the fishing methods used and how to plan a customised Southern Lakes fishing trip.

Why Fish Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea?

Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea are two of the South Island’s great alpine lakes. Both offer large areas of fishable water, dramatic mountain backdrops and the opportunity to target several freshwater sport-fishing species.

Highlights can include:

Wild brown and rainbow trout

Landlocked Chinook salmon

Deep-water trolling opportunities

Spinning and softbaiting

Selected lake-edge fly fishing

Remote shorelines and river mouths

Private trips planned around your group

Excellent scenery even when the fish are challenging

These lakes are significantly larger than they appear from the road. Local weather, wind, water temperature, seasonal fish movement and access logistics all influence where and how a trip can operate.

Fishing Lake Wanaka

Lake Wanaka is a vast glacial lake surrounded by high mountains, river valleys and long stretches of undeveloped shoreline.

The variety of available water allows anglers to explore:

Deep drop-offs

River and stream mouths

Rocky shorelines

Protected bays

Areas where baitfish and feeding trout may concentrate

Fish can move throughout the water column according to temperature, light, food and the time of year. Some days may involve searching deeper water by trolling, while other conditions can favour casting around edges, drop-offs or inflows.

What fish are in Lake Wanaka?

The main sport-fishing species are:

Brown trout: Intelligent, cautious fish that may patrol lake edges, river mouths and productive feeding areas.

Rainbow trout: Powerful and energetic fish found throughout the wider lake system.

Landlocked Chinook salmon: Schooling fish that can hold in deeper water and may be targeted using controlled-depth trolling techniques.

The location and behaviour of each species change naturally throughout the year. No single area or fishing method can be guaranteed in advance.

Fishing Lake Hawea

Lake Hawea is a deep, cold alpine lake separated from Lake Wanaka by a narrow area of land known as The Neck.

It is surrounded by steep mountain country, open shorelines and river systems feeding into the lake. The scale of Lake Hawea creates opportunities to search large areas for trout and salmon while experiencing a quieter side of the Southern Lakes region.

What fish are in Lake Hawea?

Lake Hawea supports established populations of:

Brown trout

Rainbow trout

Landlocked Chinook salmon

Trout may be encountered around shorelines, structure, drop-offs and inflowing water. Salmon are commonly associated with deeper water and moving schools of food, making boat-based trolling an effective way to search for them.

Lake Hawea is highly exposed to changing alpine weather. Wind direction and strength can quickly influence the available fishing area and whether a planned trip can operate safely.

Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout or Salmon?

Brown trout

Brown trout are one of the Southern Lakes’ most prized species. Their colouring allows them to blend into rock, weed and shadow, and they can be extremely cautious in clear water.

Depending on the conditions, they may be targeted by:

Spinning

Softbaiting

Trolling

Selected fly-fishing techniques

Rainbow trout

Rainbow trout are known for strong runs and energetic fights. They can be found in both lakes and may respond to trolling, spinning, softbaiting or fly fishing when conditions suit.

Landlocked Chinook salmon

Chinook salmon behave differently from trout. They can school, move through deep water and follow temperature layers and concentrations of baitfish.

Boat-based trolling allows a skipper to:

Cover a large area of water

Search different depths

Use downriggers or controlled-depth equipment

Adjust lure speed and presentation

Respond to changing conditions

Landlocked Chinook salmon are smaller than their sea-run relatives but remain an exciting sport-fishing target and are highly regarded as eating fish when legally retained.

How Do You Fish Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea?

Trolling

Trolling is one of the most effective ways to search large alpine lakes. It allows multiple lures to be presented while the boat covers changing depths, structure and temperature zones.

The skipper may adjust:

Boat speed

Lure style and colour

Distance behind the boat

Fishing depth

The area being searched

For a closer look at this technique, read our beginner’s guide to trolling with downriggers.

Spinning

Spin fishing can be used around lake edges, river mouths, drop-offs and other areas where trout or salmon may be feeding.

Lure weight and style must suit the depth, water clarity, target species and permitted fishing methods for the location.

Softbaiting

Softbaits allow an angler to imitate small fish and other natural prey. They can be cast, retrieved or worked through different depths depending on the fish being targeted.

Learn more about softbait fishing techniques for Queenstown and the Southern Lakes.

Fly fishing

Fly fishing may be possible around selected lake edges, river mouths and areas where trout can be reached from shore or boat.

Lake fly fishing differs from classic river fishing. Wind, depth, fish movement and the size of the water can make locating trout the greatest challenge.

When Is the Best Time to Fish Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea?

Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea provide year-round fishing opportunities under the current Otago Fish & Game regulations, although seasonal conditions influence the best methods and available fishing.

Spring: September to November

Water temperatures begin to rise

Trout become increasingly active

Fish may move around shorelines and inflowing water

Spring weather can change quickly

Summer: December to February

Long daylight hours

More time available for full-day exploration

Fish may move deeper as surface temperatures increase

Downriggers and controlled-depth trolling can become important

Afternoon wind may influence the fishing plan

Autumn: March to May

Cooling water temperatures

Changing trout and salmon movement

Productive opportunities around selected inflows

Beautiful autumn scenery and quieter conditions

Winter: June to August

Cold, clear alpine conditions

Snow-covered mountain scenery

Trout and salmon remain available

Shorter daylight hours

Warm waterproof clothing is essential

Fishing regulations can change between seasons. Always check the latest Otago regulations through Fish & Game New Zealand before fishing.

Can You Book a Guided Lake Wanaka or Hawea Fishing Trip?

Potentially, yes—but these are not regular daily departures.

Our standard shared and private lake charters depart from Frankton Marina and operate on Lake Wakatipu. Fishing Lake Wanaka or Lake Hawea requires additional planning and may be available as a private or specially arranged experience.

Availability depends on:

Your preferred date

Group size

Target species and fishing method

Guide and skipper availability

The vessel required

Launch and transport logistics

Weather and lake conditions

The duration of the experience

Because of the travel and operational planning involved, Wanaka and Hawea fishing is generally better suited to a longer private experience than a short shared charter.

Contact Queenstown Fishing with your dates, number of guests and preferred lake before making a booking.

Our ClackaCraft drift boat provides a quiet, non-motorised way to explore selected alpine lakes.

This is a separate private full-day experience for one or two anglers. The operating location is chosen according to access, weather, season and the fishing experience being planned.

The drift boat does not operate on Queenstown’s main rivers. It is designed for exploring selected still waters and secluded alpine-lake environments.

For any Southern Lakes fishing experience, bring:

Warm layered clothing

A waterproof and windproof jacket

Secure, comfortable footwear

Polarised sunglasses

A hat and sunscreen

A water bottle

Personal medication

A phone or camera

Queenstown’s alpine weather can change quickly, even during summer. It is always worth carrying an extra warm layer.

The fishing equipment supplied depends on the trip, vessel and fishing method. We will confirm all required clothing and equipment before departure.

Do You Need a Fishing Licence?

Yes. Every person actively fishing requires the appropriate current New Zealand Fish & Game sports-fishing licence.

Short-term licences are available for visitors and can be purchased through the official Fish & Game New Zealand licence website.

Fishing licences are additional to the guiding or charter price and are non-refundable.

Permitted methods, closed areas, seasons and catch limits vary between individual waterways and can change. Your guide will operate according to the regulations applying on the day.

Protecting the Southern Lakes

Anyone moving fishing equipment between New Zealand waterways must follow the Check, Clean, Dry freshwater biosecurity process.

Check: Remove visible plant material and debris.

Clean: Clean all equipment that has been in contact with freshwater.

Dry: Allow equipment to dry completely before entering another waterway.

Tell us if you are bringing fishing equipment previously used overseas or in another New Zealand lake or river.

Felt-soled wading footwear must not be used in New Zealand freshwater.

Technical sight fishing in Queenstown is one of the most challenging and rewarding ways to target wild New Zealand trout.

Rather than covering water with repeated blind casts, sight fishing begins by finding an individual fish, studying its behaviour and planning the best possible presentation. Sometimes the trout is clearly visible. At other times, the only clue may be a shadow, a flash, a moving fin or the unmistakable opening of a feeding mouth.

Queenstown provides an excellent base for reaching clear rivers, spring creeks, high-country streams and selected alpine lakes across Otago and Southland. These fisheries can offer exceptional opportunities for experienced anglers seeking technical fishing for wild brown and rainbow trout.

This guide explains what makes New Zealand sight fishing different, the skills required and how our guides plan a technical fishing day around the angler, season and conditions.

What Is Technical Sight Fishing?

Sight fishing means locating a trout before making the cast. Instead of fishing every likely piece of water, the angler and guide carefully search pools, runs, edges and feeding lanes for individual fish.

Once a trout is located, the process may involve:

Identifying the fish’s position and direction of movement

Watching its feeding pattern

Assessing current speed and water depth

Choosing the correct approach and casting angle

Selecting a fly, nymph, streamer or light-tackle presentation

Allowing for leader, tippet and sink time

Making one accurate cast without disturbing the fish

The cast is only one part of the challenge. Successful sight fishing also requires patience, stealth, observation, line control and the ability to adapt when a fish changes position or refuses a presentation.

Why Is Queenstown a Strong Base for Sight Fishing?

Queenstown sits within reach of an extraordinary variety of freshwater environments. Within the wider region are clear alpine rivers, freestone streams, spring-influenced water, large Southern Lakes and remote backcountry valleys.

This variety is important because no single river fishes perfectly every day. Rain, snowmelt, wind, temperature, river levels, fishing pressure and seasonal trout behaviour can all influence visibility and feeding activity.

Our guides select water according to:

River level and clarity

Current and forecast weather

Wind direction and strength

Recent fishing pressure

Seasonal insect activity

The experience and fitness of the anglers

The style of fishing you want to pursue

Rather than promising one famous river in advance, we build the day around the best legal and accessible water available for the conditions.

What Trout Can You Sight Fish For?

Wild brown trout

Brown trout are the classic South Island sight-fishing target. Their colouring allows them to blend almost perfectly into rock, weed and shadow, making an experienced guide’s eyes extremely valuable.

Brown trout can be cautious, selective and easily disturbed. A fish may inspect several presentations before eating—or disappear after detecting one unnatural movement.

Wild rainbow trout

Rainbow trout are powerful, energetic and often more willing to move for a well-presented fly or lure. They can still be highly technical in clear water, particularly after experiencing fishing pressure.

Both species are entirely wild. Their size, location and willingness to feed vary naturally, which is exactly what makes every encounter different.

How Do Guides Spot Trout?

Spotting trout is a skill developed through years of watching water. Guides do not simply look for the complete outline of a fish. They search for small differences in colour, shape and movement.

Possible signs include:

A shadow that moves independently of the current

A pale mouth opening and closing

The flash of a fin

A dark shape beside submerged structure

A fish sliding sideways to intercept food

A disturbance or rise on the surface

A subtle change in the rhythm of the water

Once a fish is located, your guide can help you identify its exact position, orientation and feeding lane. That information determines where to stand and where the cast must land.

Polarised sunglasses are essential for reducing glare and seeing beneath the surface. Bring the best-quality pair available to you, preferably with copper, amber or brown lenses suited to changing light.

What Makes New Zealand Sight Fishing So Technical?

Clear water

New Zealand’s clear water allows anglers to see trout, but it also allows trout to see anglers. Careless movement, a bright silhouette or line flashing overhead can end an opportunity before the first cast.

Wild fish

The trout are naturally reproducing wild fish. They are alert to predators, changes in their environment and unnatural presentations.

Long leaders and accurate presentation

Clear water often requires longer leaders and fine tippet. The exact setup depends on the water, wind, fly size and fish being targeted.

Accuracy is usually more important than distance. A short, controlled cast landing in the correct feeding lane can be far more effective than a long cast with poor line control.

Complex currents

A trout may be holding in one current while several different currents act on the leader and fly. Managing these competing speeds is critical to achieving a natural drift.

Limited opportunities

Some fish allow several presentations. Others may offer only one genuine chance. Technical sight fishing rewards preparation, patience and making the first cast count.

Fly-Fishing Techniques for Sighted Trout

The correct technique depends on what the trout is doing when it is found.

Dry-fly fishing

A trout feeding on the surface offers one of fly fishing’s most exciting opportunities. The fly must land naturally in the feeding lane without the leader or fly line alerting the fish.

Dry-fly choices may include mayfly, caddis, midge and terrestrial patterns such as cicadas or beetles, depending on the season and current insect activity.

Nymph fishing

Many trout feed beneath the surface even when no obvious hatch is visible. A carefully weighted nymph must reach the correct depth while maintaining a natural drift.

Your guide may adjust:

Fly weight and size

Leader length

Indicator position

Cast placement

Drift angle

Streamer fishing

Streamers can be effective when trout are actively hunting, holding in deeper water or responding to more aggressive presentations. Seeing a fish turn and chase a streamer can be every bit as exciting as watching a dry fly disappear.

Light spin and softbait fishing

Technical sight fishing is not restricted to fly fishing. Where regulations and conditions allow, small lures and softbaits can be presented to visible trout using light spin tackle.

Our 4WD softbait and spin-fishing experience provides an alternative for anglers wanting to target wild trout without using fly-fishing equipment.

Stealth, Positioning and the Approach

Good sight fishing often begins long before the cast.

Your guide may ask you to:

Stay low against the skyline

Approach from downstream or behind the fish

Move slowly and avoid sudden gestures

Keep unnecessary line off the water

Use vegetation, banks and natural structure for cover

Wait for the fish to return to a predictable feeding rhythm

Positioning involves balancing several competing factors. You need enough room to cast, a suitable angle for the drift and a safe place to stand—all without alerting the trout.

Sometimes the best decision is to wait. A rushed cast from the wrong position is rarely better than taking another few minutes to improve the approach.

When Is the Best Time for Sight Fishing in Queenstown?

Our main guided river season generally runs from 1 October to 31 May. Sight-fishing opportunities change throughout that period.

Spring: October to November

Trout become increasingly active after winter

Early-season hatches begin

Some fish may have experienced less recent pressure

Rain and snowmelt can affect river clarity

Summer: December to February

Long daylight hours

Strong opportunities for clear-water sight fishing

Dry-fly and terrestrial activity

Higher demand on well-known fisheries

Bright sun can improve visibility but also make anglers more visible

Autumn: March to May

Cooler temperatures

Changing autumn light and conditions

Fewer anglers on some waters

Trout feeding before the spawning period

There is no single guaranteed “best” month. The right timing depends on your preferred fishing style, the water you want to explore and the conditions during your visit.

Our private full-day 4WD fishing experiences take anglers beyond central Queenstown into the wider trout fisheries of Otago and Southland.

The destination is selected close to the fishing date according to river conditions, weather, access and the experience of the anglers. The driving is part of the adventure, opening access to remote valleys and water that cannot be reached during a short Queenstown outing.

A typical guided day may include:

Pickup from your Queenstown accommodation

Travel by 4WD to the selected fishing area

Walk-and-wade fishing

Trout spotting and technical instruction

Morning tea and a cut lunch

Approximately eight to nine hours of guiding and travel

Our private 4WD fly-fishing experience caters for one or two anglers per guide and can be tailored for experienced fishers seeking technical sight-fishing opportunities.

Technical sight fishing can also take place on selected alpine lakes.

Our purpose-built ClackaCraft provides quiet, non-motorised access to secluded still water. From the boat, anglers may search shorelines, weed beds, drop-offs and cruising lanes for trout.

The drift boat operates on selected alpine lakes rather than Queenstown’s main rivers. It is a private full-day experience for one or two anglers and offers a different challenge from walk-and-wade river fishing.

HELIfish provides access to remote backcountry rivers beyond normal road access. These trips combine aviation, wilderness and technical fishing into a private expedition-style day.

A helicopter can reduce travel time and provide access to isolated water, but it does not make wild trout easy to catch. Remote fish still require careful spotting, a controlled approach and an accurate presentation.

Every HELIfish trip depends on:

Safe flying conditions

River level and clarity

Permitted landing access

Angler experience and fitness

The most suitable destination available

Do I need to be an experienced fly angler?

No, but technical sight fishing is best suited to anglers who understand basic casting and line control or who are keen to learn. Your guide can adjust the day to your ability and help improve your casting, presentation and water-reading skills.

Can you guarantee sight fishing?

No. Visibility depends on river clarity, light, wind, weather and fish behaviour. Your guide will choose the best available plan, but wild trout and natural conditions can never be guaranteed.

Can you guarantee I will catch a trout?

No responsible guide can guarantee a catch. We provide experienced local guides, quality equipment, instruction and the best possible plan for the conditions.

Can I request a particular river?

You can discuss preferred locations and fishing styles with us, but a particular river cannot be guaranteed. The final destination is selected according to weather, water levels, access, fishing pressure and angler ability.

How many anglers can fish with one guide?

Our private 4WD river and alpine-lake drift-boat experiences are generally designed for one or two anglers per guide. Additional guides can be arranged for larger groups, subject to availability.

Can I sight fish with spin or softbait equipment?

Yes, where the location, regulations and conditions suit. Technical light-tackle fishing can involve presenting small lures or softbaits to visible trout.

Can I keep a trout?

Keeping a fish depends on the location and current Fish & Game regulations. Catch and release is encouraged on guided river trips, particularly for trophy fish and sensitive backcountry fisheries.

What happens if the river is high or discoloured?

Your guide will assess the conditions and may select another river, change the destination or recommend a different fishing style. Access and safety always come first.

Heli fishing in Queenstown combines remote backcountry rivers, private professional guiding and an unforgettable helicopter journey across New Zealand’s alpine landscape.

Instead of spending hours driving and walking to reach the water, a helicopter can transport anglers beyond the road and closer to carefully selected fishing locations.

For visiting anglers, heli fishing provides an opportunity to experience parts of the Southern Lakes and surrounding backcountry that most travellers will never see.

Queenstown Fishing’s heliFISH experience is being developed as a private, full-day helicopter fishing adventure departing from Queenstown or Glenorchy.

What is heli fishing?

Heli fishing, also known as helicopter fishing, uses a helicopter to reach remote rivers and backcountry fishing areas.

Some of these locations would otherwise take many hours, or even several days, to access on foot.

The helicopter flight is more than transportation. It is a major part of the experience, carrying guests across mountains, valleys, rivers and isolated alpine country before landing near the selected fishing area.

Once on the ground, you will fish with a professional Queenstown Fishing guide.

The day is tailored around your experience, the season, water conditions and the type of fishing you want to enjoy.

Queenstown is surrounded by an enormous variety of alpine and backcountry fishing environments.

Helicopter access opens the possibility of travelling beyond the better-known roadside locations and into quieter country where the landscape feels genuinely remote.

A Queenstown heli-fishing experience offers:

A spectacular helicopter journey

For many guests, the day is as much about exploring New Zealand’s wilderness as it is about catching fish.

Where does heli fishing depart from?

Queenstown Fishing’s heliFISH experience may depart from either Queenstown or Glenorchy.

The final departure point will depend on the selected fishing location, helicopter operations, weather and the best overall itinerary for your group.

Queenstown departure

A Queenstown departure is convenient for guests staying in Queenstown, Frankton, Arrowtown or the surrounding resort area.

Glenorchy departure

Glenorchy sits at the northern end of Lake Wakatipu, approximately 45 minutes by road from central Queenstown.

Departing from Glenorchy can provide a different approach to the surrounding alpine country and may suit particular fishing locations or weather conditions.

The departure point will be confirmed as part of your final itinerary.

Where do heli-fishing trips go?

There is no single fixed destination.

The exact river or fishing area will be selected according to:

The time of year

River levels

Water clarity

Recent weather

Helicopter access

Fishing conditions

Your experience and interests

The pilot’s final operational decision

Keeping the destination flexible allows your guide and helicopter operator to select the best safe option available for the day.

Specific fishing locations are not guaranteed, and approved access requirements must always be respected.

How long is a heli-fishing trip?

The planned heliFISH experience is approximately nine hours.

This allows time for the helicopter journey, landing procedures, preparing equipment, fishing and enjoying the surrounding landscape without rushing the day.

Final timings will depend on the chosen itinerary, departure point and flying conditions.

Heli-fishing trips will normally require a morning departure to make the most of available daylight and fishing time.

What is the best season for heli fishing in Queenstown?

Queenstown Fishing’s planned heliFISH season is from November through May.

These months generally provide access to a wider range of open rivers and backcountry fishing areas.

Conditions can vary significantly throughout the season.

Spring may bring higher river flows, summer offers longer daylight hours, and autumn can provide cooler temperatures and changing alpine colours.

Weather and river conditions will always determine which locations are suitable.

How many people can join a heli-fishing trip?

heliFISH is being developed as a private experience for groups of one to four guests.

The final group arrangement will depend on:

The helicopter being used

Passenger and equipment weight

The selected itinerary

The number of anglers

The number of fishing guides required

Smaller groups allow the guide to provide more personal instruction and ensure everyone receives quality fishing time.

Is heli fishing suitable for beginners?

Yes.

You do not need to be an expert fly fisher to experience heli fishing in Queenstown.

A private guide can tailor the day to suit first-time anglers, intermediate fishers or experienced anglers travelling with their own favourite equipment.

Beginners can receive help with:

Casting techniques

Reading the water

Identifying likely trout habitat

Fly selection

Managing line and presentation

Hooking, playing and landing fish

More experienced anglers can focus on exploring new water, refining techniques and targeting challenging wild trout.

Honest information about your fishing experience helps us plan the most suitable day.

What fish can you catch?

The main species targeted on Queenstown backcountry fishing trips are wild brown trout and rainbow trout.

The available species will depend on the river system and location selected for the day.

These are wild fish living in natural environments. Their behaviour is affected by weather, water temperature, river flow, insect activity and many other natural factors.

No particular catch, fish size or number of fish can be guaranteed.

That uncertainty is part of genuine backcountry fishing.

What should you bring?

Your final packing list will be confirmed when the itinerary is arranged.

As a general guide, heli-fishing guests should bring:

Warm outdoor layers

A waterproof jacket

A hat or beanie

Polarised sunglasses

Sunscreen

Suitable outdoor footwear

A camera or phone

Personal medication

Queenstown’s alpine weather can change quickly, even during summer.

Your guide and helicopter operator may provide additional instructions about clothing, equipment weight and what can safely be carried in the aircraft.

Do you need a fishing licence?

Yes.

Anyone fishing for trout or salmon in New Zealand requires a valid Fish & Game sports-fishing licence.

The appropriate licence must be arranged before fishing begins.

Licence options include short-term and non-resident licences. The correct option will depend on your residency and the length of your fishing trip.

What are the biosecurity requirements?

Protecting New Zealand’s waterways is extremely important.

Fishing equipment moving between rivers must follow current Check, Clean, Dry biosecurity requirements to help prevent the spread of didymo and other freshwater pests.

Your guide will advise you about equipment cleaning and any restrictions that apply to personal fishing gear.

Always tell us if your boots, waders or fishing equipment have recently been used in another New Zealand river or overseas.

What happens if the weather is unsuitable?

All heli-fishing experiences are subject to weather, water conditions, aircraft availability and the pilot’s final safety decision.

The weather in alpine areas can differ significantly from conditions in central Queenstown.

If the original fishing location is unsuitable, an alternative location or itinerary may be considered.

The helicopter pilot always has the final decision on whether it is safe to fly and land.

Final weather arrangements and booking conditions will be explained before your trip is confirmed.

Is heli fishing environmentally responsible?

Helicopter access must be planned carefully and used responsibly.

Queenstown Fishing works within approved access requirements and follows current fishing, biosecurity and aviation regulations.

Guests should:

Follow the guide’s instructions

Respect private land and approved access

Leave no rubbish behind

Avoid damaging riverbanks and vegetation

Handle fish carefully

Follow all fishing regulations

Practise responsible catch and release where appropriate

The goal is to enjoy these environments while helping protect them for future anglers.

Looking for a fun family activity in Queenstown that gets the kids outdoors and away from the crowds?

A fishing trip on Lake Wakatipu is an easy way for families to experience Queenstown’s scenery, learn something new and share the excitement of catching a trout or salmon.

No previous fishing experience is required. We provide the fishing equipment and friendly instruction needed to get everyone involved.

Queenstown Fishing has been teaching people to fish since 1995.

Our family-friendly fishing charters operate throughout the year, making this an activity families can enjoy during the summer holidays, autumn, winter ski season or spring.

Can children go fishing in Queenstown?

Absolutely.

Fishing is a great Queenstown activity for children, including kids who have never held a fishing rod before.

Our skippers and fishing guides take the time to show children how everything works, from holding the rod and watching for a bite to winding in their first fish.

We keep the experience relaxed, practical and fun.

Parents and grandparents are welcome to fish alongside the children or simply enjoy the journey and scenery.

Which fishing trip is best for families?

Our two-hour and three-hour shared fishing experiences are the most popular choices for families.

Two-hour fishing experience

The two-hour trip is a great introduction to fishing.

It is especially suitable for younger children or families with limited time in Queenstown.

It provides enough time to get out on Lake Wakatipu, try different fishing methods and give everyone a chance to catch a fish without committing most of the day.

Three-hour fishing experience

Our three-hour fishing experience is the most popular option.

The additional time allows us to explore more of the lake, visit different fishing areas and increase the opportunity to catch trout or salmon.

Private family fishing charter

Families wanting the boat to themselves can book a private fishing charter. A private Lake Series trip gives your group the whole boat, flexible timing and a more personal Lake Wakatipu experience.

A private trip gives your family more flexibility and allows the skipper to tailor the experience around the children’s ages, confidence and interests.

It is also ideal for larger families, special occasions or multiple generations travelling together.

Do children need fishing experience?

Not at all.

Many of the children who join us are fishing for the very first time.

Our team will demonstrate the equipment, explain what to look for and help each child throughout the trip.

We teach people to fish rather than simply handing them a rod.

Children can be involved in setting the gear, watching for strikes and winding in fish under the skipper’s supervision.

Experienced young anglers are also welcome, and we can adapt the trip to suit their ability.

What fish can children catch in Queenstown?

Lake Wakatipu is home to several freshwater sport-fish species, including:

Rainbow trout

Brown trout

Landlocked Chinook salmon

Every fishing trip is different, and catching a fish can never be guaranteed.

That uncertainty is part of the adventure.

When a rod bends and a child realises there is a fish on the other end, it often becomes one of the biggest highlights of their Queenstown holiday.

Is fishing equipment provided?

Yes.

Rods, reels, tackle and the fishing equipment required for the charter are provided.

Children and adults should dress for Queenstown’s changeable alpine weather.

We recommend bringing:

Warm layers

A waterproof jacket

Sunglasses

Sunscreen

A hat or beanie

A camera or phone for photos

Closed-toe footwear is recommended.

During winter, gloves and an extra warm layer are also a good idea.

Do children need a fishing licence?

Anyone actively fishing requires a current New Zealand freshwater fishing licence, including children.

Short-term licences are available online through Fish & Game New Zealand.

Your booking confirmation will include information about purchasing the correct licence before your trip.

Fishing licences are separate from the charter price.

Is the boat suitable for families?

Our main Queenstown charter boat, Nikita, has an enclosed cabin, diesel heating and an onboard toilet.

These facilities make longer trips more comfortable for families, particularly during the cooler months.

The boat is operated by qualified Maritime New Zealand skippers and carries the required commercial safety equipment.

The skipper always has the final say on weather and lake conditions.

If conditions are unsuitable, we will contact you to discuss the available options.

Can families go fishing in Queenstown during winter?

Yes.

Lake fishing in Queenstown operates year-round.

Winter fishing can be a fantastic experience, with snow-covered mountains surrounding Lake Wakatipu and fewer boats on the water.

The enclosed heated cabin provides somewhere warm to sit between fishing spots.

Summer brings longer days and warmer temperatures, while autumn and spring offer changing colours and beautiful alpine conditions.

Every season provides a different view of Queenstown.

River fishing has a defined season, but our Lake Wakatipu fishing experiences are available throughout the year.

Are child fares available?

Yes.

Reduced child fares are available on our shared fishing experiences.

Children aged five and under can join selected shared trips free of charge.

Current prices, available departure times and private-charter options can be found through our online booking page.

Where do Queenstown fishing trips depart?

Our regular Queenstown fishing charters depart from Frankton Marina on Sugar Lane.

Frankton Marina is approximately 15 minutes from central Queenstown by car, depending on traffic.

Guests should arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled departure time.

With towering mountains rising straight from the lake and crystal-clear water stretching as far as the eye can see, it’s one of the most scenic freshwater fishing destinations in New Zealand.

Most people know Glenorchy for its incredible scenery, world-class hiking and crystal-clear waters.

But there’s another reason this small town at the head of Lake Wakatipu is making headlines around the world.

Tāhuna Glenorchy is now officially recognised as an International Dark Sky Sanctuary.

That puts Glenorchy among some of the most pristine night sky locations on the planet.

Pretty impressive for a town with a population of only a few hundred people.

What Is A Dark Sky Sanctuary?

A Dark Sky Sanctuary is one of the highest levels of protection awarded to places with exceptionally dark and natural night skies.

In simple terms…

Less light pollution

More stars

Better views of the Milky Way

Better chances of seeing the Southern Lights (Aurora Australis)

A healthier environment for wildlife and people

The result?

A night sky experience that most of the world can no longer enjoy.

Why Glenorchy?

Anyone who’s spent time in Glenorchy probably isn’t surprised.

With no major cities nearby, very little development and thousands of hectares of protected wilderness surrounding the township, the conditions are almost perfect.

On a clear winter night you can stand beside Lake Wakatipu and see:

The Milky Way stretching across the sky

Countless stars invisible in cities

Satellites drifting overhead

Shooting stars

The occasional Aurora Australis dancing across the southern horizon

It’s one of those experiences that photos never quite do justice.

Fish By Day

While the stars steal the show at night, the daylight hours are pretty spectacular too.

Winter is actually one of our favourite times to fish Lake Wakatipu.

Snow-covered mountains

Excellent trout fishing

Calm mornings on the lake

Incredible photography opportunities

Perfect for families, couples and first-time anglers

Many visitors are surprised to learn that fishing continues throughout winter, with rainbow trout, brown trout and salmon all available in the colder months.

Best of all, you don’t need any fishing experience.

We’ll teach you everything you need to know.

Then Stay For Sunset

As the sun drops behind the mountains, Glenorchy transforms.

The crowds disappear.

The lake becomes glassy calm.

The mountains glow with the last light of the day.

It’s the perfect time to grab a meal, relax by the fire and prepare for the real show to begin.

Stars By Night

Once darkness falls, look up.

Really look up.

You’ll quickly understand why Glenorchy earned Dark Sky Sanctuary status.

Away from the bright lights of major cities, the night sky comes alive.

The Milky Way becomes visible from horizon to horizon.

If you’ve already booked your Queenstown winter holiday and you’re nervously refreshing the snow report every morning, don’t panic.

The truth is, Queenstown is much more than just skiing.

In fact, while everyone is waiting for the next snowfall, we’ve already started seeing winter bookings roll in from visitors looking for something different to do during their stay.

And that’s where fishing comes in.

Lake Wakatipu offers world-class trout fishing all year round, and winter is one of our favourite times to be on the water.

The mountains are dusted with snow, the lake is quiet, the air is crisp, and some days it feels like you have the entire place to yourself.

Best of all, you don’t need any fishing experience.

Most of our guests have never picked up a fishing rod before. Within minutes they’re casting, learning new skills and often catching their first trout or salmon.

Why Fishing Is Perfect In Winter

No experience required

Stunning snow-capped scenery

Family friendly

Great for couples

Fresh air without spending all day on the ski field

Catch your own dinner

One of the highlights for many guests is taking home a fresh rainbow trout or salmon. Some even have their catch prepared by a local restaurant for dinner that evening.

Now that’s hard to beat.

Already Coming To Queenstown?

Many visitors book flights and accommodation months in advance.

If the snow arrives late, that doesn’t mean your holiday is ruined.

Spend a morning or afternoon exploring Lake Wakatipu, learning to fish and taking in some of the most spectacular scenery New Zealand has to offer.

You might even catch dinner along the way.

Winter Is One Of Queenstown’s Best Kept Secrets

While everyone is watching the ski reports, we’re out on the lake doing what we love.

Teaching people to fish.

Creating memories.

And showing visitors a side of Queenstown many never get to experience.

Snow or no snow, the fish are still biting.

See you on the water.

Your next adventure starts here.
explore. fish. repeat.

Absolutely – and for many anglers, winter is actually one of the best times to fish in Queenstown.

While most visitors think Queenstown is only about skiing during winter , the lakes around Queenstown continue to produce excellent trout and salmon fishing right through the colder months.

Add snow-covered mountains , calm mornings, crystal-clear water, and fewer crowds, and winter fishing becomes one of the region’s most underrated experiences.

At Queenstown Fishing, our lake fishing charters operate year-round from Frankton Marina, just five minutes from Queenstown Airport.

What Fish Can You Catch During Winter?

During winter around Queenstown, anglers commonly target:

Rainbow Trout

Brown Trout

Chinook Salmon

Lake Wakatipu can fish exceptionally well during winter, especially on calm days when trout move into shallower feeding areas.

Cooler water temperatures also keep fish active throughout the day.

Winter fishing often surprises first-time anglers with the size and quality of fish available during the colder months.

Is Winter Fishing Good For Beginners?

Definitely.

Winter lake fishing is actually a fantastic option for beginners, families, and visitors who have never fished before.

Unlike river fly fishing, lake fishing during winter is generally:

easier to learn

more comfortable

less physically demanding

suitable for all ages

Our guides provide all fishing equipment and help guests every step of the way

You do not need previous fishing experience.

One of the best parts of guided fishing is watching complete beginners catch their first trout while surrounded by snow-covered mountains.

Our shared fishing charters are especially popular with families and first-time anglers visiting Queenstown during winter.

Is It Cold On The Boat?

This is probably the most common question we get during winter.

Our main charter vessel, Nikita, is fully enclosed and fitted with a diesel heater, offering a warm and comfortable experience even during colder conditions.

The boat also features:

indoor seating

protection from wind and rain

onboard toilet

stable fishing platform

hot drinks available on request

Many guests are surprised how comfortable winter fishing can actually be.

For private groups wanting extra comfort and flexibility, our private fishing charters are available year-round.

Why Winter Fishing In Queenstown Is So Special

Winter fishing in Queenstown offers a completely different atmosphere compared to summer.

The lake becomes quieter, the mountains are often covered in snow, and the scenery can be spectacular on calm winter mornings.

It is not uncommon to experience:

mirror-flat lake conditions

snowy alpine views

crystal-clear winter light

active trout fishing

very little boat traffic

For photographers and outdoor lovers, winter can easily become the most scenic time of year to fish in Queenstown

If you are searching for unique winter activities in Queenstown, fishing is one of the few outdoor adventures that continues right through the colder months.

What Should You Wear?

We recommend dressing in warm outdoor layers similar to a ski day:

waterproof jacket

warm hat

gloves

sunglasses

non-slip shoes

Queenstown is known worldwide for mountains, lakes and adventure, but it is also an exceptional base for exploring some of New Zealand’s finest fly-fishing country.

From clear sight-fishing rivers and remote backcountry streams to 4WD adventures, alpine-lake drift-boat trips and helicopter access, the wider Queenstown region offers options for complete beginners and experienced anglers.

Queenstown Fishing is a second-generation guiding business that has been teaching people to fish since 1995. I grew up in Gore fishing the Mataura River, and that lifelong knowledge now shapes the guided experiences we offer throughout Queenstown, Otago, Southland and selected remote regions.

This guide explains the Queenstown fly-fishing season, target species, trip options, equipment, licences, biosecurity and what to expect from a guided day.

Why Is Queenstown a Great Fly-Fishing Destination?

Queenstown sits within reach of clear alpine rivers, spring creeks, high-country streams and large Southern Lakes. This variety allows guides to choose the water and fishing style that best suits the angler, season, weather and river conditions.

Highlights of fly fishing around Queenstown include:

Wild brown and rainbow trout

Clear-water sight fishing

Remote 4WD river access

Backcountry streams away from the crowds

Alpine-lake drift-boat fishing

Helicopter access to remote rivers

Guided options for beginners and experienced anglers

Queenstown also makes an excellent base for multi-region trips into Otago and Southland, including the Mataura River country where our family fishing story began.

What Fish Can You Catch Around Queenstown?

Brown trout

Brown trout are the iconic target for many South Island fly anglers. They are intelligent, easily spooked and often visible in Queenstown’s clear rivers, creating exciting sight-fishing opportunities.

Rainbow trout

Rainbow trout are powerful, energetic fish found throughout the wider region. They can provide fast action and memorable fights for beginners and experienced anglers alike.

Landlocked Chinook salmon

Landlocked Chinook salmon can also be caught in Southern Lakes, including Lake Wakatipu. They are more commonly encountered during lake-fishing trips than on guided river fly-fishing days.

When Is the Queenstown Fly-Fishing Season?

Our guided river fly-fishing season generally runs from 1 October to 31 May. Lake fishing is available throughout the year, giving visitors an alternative outside the main river season or when river conditions are unsuitable.

Spring: October to December

The river season opens on 1 October

Yes. Many guests join us for their first experience with a fly rod.

We teach people to fish, so your guide can help with:

Basic casting technique

Reading the water

Spotting trout

Choosing flies

Presentation and line control

Playing and carefully releasing fish

A beginner’s day is adjusted to suit the angler rather than expecting them to arrive with advanced skills. More experienced anglers can focus on technical sight fishing, longer leaders, remote water and challenging wild trout.

A 5-weight or 6-weight fly rod

Yes. Anyone actively fishing requires a current New Zealand Fish & Game sports-fishing licence.

Short-term licences are available for overseas visitors, and we can help arrange the correct licence on the day or onboard. Fishing licences are separate from the guiding or charter price and are non-refundable.

What Are New Zealand’s Fishing Biosecurity Rules?

Anglers must take freshwater biosecurity seriously to prevent the spread of didymo and other aquatic pests.

Follow the Check, Clean, Dry process whenever moving between waterways:

Check equipment and remove visible material

Clean anything that has been in contact with freshwater

Dry equipment thoroughly before entering another waterway

Tell us if you are bringing fishing equipment previously used in another New Zealand waterway or overseas. Your guide will help ensure the correct cleaning requirements are followed.

Clear New Zealand rivers can be difficult to fish without local knowledge. Trout are often visible, but they can also be wary, selective and easily disturbed.

A professional guide helps with:

Selecting the right water for current conditions

Access and private-land requirements

Safe travel into remote areas

Trout spotting and water reading

Casting, fly choice and presentation

Fish handling and conservation

Making the most of limited fishing time

Queenstown Fishing has operated since 1995. Our guided river trips use experienced professional guides, including members of the New Zealand Professional Fishing Guides Association.

Most guided 4WD river and alpine-lake drift-boat experiences are full-day trips of approximately eight to nine hours.

Your day may include:

Pickup from your Queenstown accommodation

Travel by 4WD to the selected fishing area

Fishing instruction and local guiding

Morning tea and a cut lunch

Access to scenic and less-crowded water

Return transport after the fishing day

Exact departure times, pickup details and equipment requirements are confirmed when you book.

Queenstown’s trout fisheries and remote environments deserve careful treatment. We encourage anglers to:

Follow current Fish & Game regulations

Respect private land and access agreements

Handle fish carefully

Practise responsible catch and release

Follow Check, Clean, Dry requirements

Remove all rubbish and leave no trace

Protecting these places helps preserve the fishing experience for future generations.
