Planning a fishing trip in Queenstown? This guide answers the most common questions we get about fishing charters – from what to bring, to how long trips last, and what you can expect on the water.
đ General Fishing Information
Do I need a fishing license in New Zealand?
Yes, youâll need a valid freshwater fishing license. We can organize this for you when you book, or you can purchase it online from Fish & Game New Zealand.
What species can I catch on your charters?
We target rainbow trout, brown trout, and landlocked Chinook salmon depending on the season and location.
Whatâs the best time of year to fish in Queenstown?
Fishing is great year-round, but spring, winter & autumn offer peak trout activity. Fly fishing and river season typically runs from October through May.
Are your charters family-friendly?
Absolutely! We regularly host families and tailor trips to suit all ages and experience levels. Itâs a great introduction to fishing for kids.
Whatâs included in a fishing charter?
All gear, tackle, bait, life jackets, and a local expert guide are included. You just need to bring warm layers, sunglasses, and a camera to capture the day.
Is the fishing suitable for beginners?
Yes! Our guides love helping beginners get started. Weâll teach you how to cast, reel, and even clean your catch if you decide to keep it.

đ What to Bring
What should I bring on a fishing charter?
Bring snacks, drinks, sunscreen, a hat, warm layers (even in summer), sunglasses, and a weatherproof bag for valuables. A towel and a vacuum-seal bag can be handy if you plan to take fish home.
Can I bring food or drinks?

đ¤ What to Expect
Where do we meet and when does the trip start?
Youâll meet us at the Frankton Marina (unless otherwise stated on your booking voucher), Berth B02 – just behind the KJet booking office on the floating marina, Sugar Lane, Frankton. Please arrive about 15 minutes before departure. Most charters begin at 9am or 1pm year-round.
Will I definitely catch a fish?
We canât guarantee a catch – thatâs fishing! But we take you to proven hot spots, and our guides will do everything possible to get you hooked up. Most of our guests do land fish.
Do you cancel trips due to bad weather?
Yes, if conditions are unsafe. Weâll get in touch with you and offer the choice to reschedule or receive a full refund if we cancel the trip.
How many people are on a shared charter?
Our shared charters are capped at small group sizes (usually 4-6 people max) to ensure a personalized and spacious experience.
Can I book a private fishing trip?
Definitely. We offer 2-hour, 3-hour, and 6-hour private charters, along with exclusive 4WD and drift boat options if youâre after something special.
⸝
đ˝ď¸ Cook Your Catch or Catch & Release
Can I keep the fish I catch?
Yes. On Lake Wakatipu, the legal bag limit is 4 salmon and 2 trout per person. Youâre welcome to take your catch home, or you can enjoy our âCook Your Catchâ add-on – weâll take your trout or salmon to a local Queenstown restaurant where itâs prepared fresh. We also encourage catch & release for conservation.
⸝
â ď¸ Other Considerations
What about motion sickness?
Most guests donât experience motion sickness on our trips – we operate on freshwater lakes so the ride is generally smooth, there is no swell but we can get wind chop some days. However, if youâre prone to it consider taking seasickness medication beforehand just in case.
Are there bathroom facilities on board?
Yes – our larger vessels have onboard toilets. For smaller boats or shorter trips, we recommend using the facilities at the marina before departure.
Is the experience eco-friendly?
Yes. We follow strict Fish & Game NZ guidelines, promote sustainable fishing practices, and offer low-impact options like drift boat fishing. We care deeply about protecting the lakes and rivers we operate in.
