The Big 6 is Queenstown Fishing’s signature premium Expedition, bringing together private freshwater fishing, a scenic helicopter or fixed-wing journey through the Southern Alps and a West Coast saltwater charter with Jackson Bay Charters.
Designed as a fully hosted private experience for groups of up to six guests, The Big 6 can be planned across one or two days depending on the group, aircraft, conditions and final itinerary. This is more than a fishing trip. It is an alpine-to-ocean journey through some of the most spectacular country in New Zealand.

The Challenge
The goal is to target six iconic freshwater and saltwater species found in New Zealand across a carefully planned one- or two-day itinerary:
- Freshwater: brown trout, rainbow trout and landlocked salmon
- Saltwater: kingfish, blue cod and tarakihi
The Big 6 is a challenge, not a catch guarantee. Weather, water and fish all have the final say, and the itinerary may be adjusted to make the most of the day’s conditions.

Each itinerary is tailored to the group’s experience and conditions, from enthusiastic beginners through to serious fishos chasing all six species.
Important to Know
This is a highly weather-dependent experience involving both aviation and marine operations. Final duration, routing, landing locations and fishing plans remain subject to the decisions of the pilots, skippers and guides. Pricing will be confirmed on application and will depend on group size, aircraft requirements and the final one or two-day itinerary.
From the Alps to the Ocean
- Begin with a private freshwater fishing session in the Queenstown or Glenorchy region
- Cross the Southern Alps by helicopter or fixed-wing aircraft, with the final route selected around the experience and conditions
- Where a helicopter itinerary is selected, a remote alpine fishing stop or scenic landing may be included, subject to conditions
- Continue to Jackson Bay for a private West Coast saltwater charter
- Complete the challenge in one exceptional day, or spread it across two days for more time in each environment and greater flexibility around conditions
