Brown trout

Lake Wakatipu is Queenstown’s most accessible and iconic fishing destination. This deep, glacier-carved alpine lake holds rainbow trout, brown trout and Chinook salmon and is open for fishing throughout the year.

Our regular short lake charters operate on Lake Wakatipu. Fishing farther afield is best suited to tailored full-day or expedition-style planning and depends on the chosen experience, vessel, weather and availability.

5. Secluded Alpine Lakes

🎫 Do You Need a Fishing Licence in Queenstown?
Yes. Anyone actively fishing requires a current New Zealand Fish & Game sports-fishing licence.
Short-term licences are available for visitors and can be purchased through the official Fish & Game New Zealand licence website. We can also help arrange the correct licence on the day or onboard.
Fishing licences are additional to the charter or guiding price and are non-refundable. Regulations, seasons and permitted fishing methods vary between waterways, so always check the rules applying to the location you intend to fish.
🧼 What Are the Freshwater Biosecurity Rules?
New Zealand anglers must help prevent the spread of didymo and other freshwater pests by following the Check, Clean, Dry process whenever moving between waterways.
- Check: Remove all visible plant material and debris from equipment.
- Clean: Clean equipment that has been in contact with freshwater.
- Dry: Allow equipment to dry completely before entering another waterway.
Tell your guide if you are bringing fishing equipment that has previously been used overseas or in another New Zealand waterway. Felt-soled wading boots must not be used in New Zealand freshwater.
